Improving Lash Retention: Essential Tips for Lash Artists
Eyelash extension retention is a crucial factor that clients consider when investing in lash extensions. They expect their new look to last well beyond their salon visit, making it essential for lash technicians to address retention issues effectively. This article explores the common causes of poor lash retention and provides valuable insights on preventive measures to ensure long-lasting, beautiful lashes.
Causes of Poor Lash Retention
Understanding the factors contributing to poor retention is the first step in addressing this issue. Some common causes include:
Improper application techniques
Low-quality adhesive or lash extensions
Inadequate aftercare by clients
Environmental factors (incorrect humidity, temperature)
Client's natural lash health and growth cycle
Preventative Measures for Better Retention
To improve lash retention and ensure client satisfaction, consider implementing these strategies:
Refine your application technique through continuous training
Use high-quality, professional-grade products
Educate clients on proper aftercare routines
Adjust your application method based on environmental conditions
Assess and address clients' natural lash health before application
Shampoo and dry the client's lashes before starting
Focusing on these aspects can significantly enhance lash retention and give your clients the long-lasting, beautiful results they desire.
TIP 1: KEEP YOUR LASHING ENVIRONMENT UNDER CONTROL (HUMIDITY & TEMPERATURE WISE)
We highly recommend getting a hydrometer and downloading our free LASH GLUE TESTING FORM so you can track what's working and what isn't. Every day or every other day, fill out the form and write in notes if it was raining, snowing, a heat wave, or anything like if the glue wasn't working like you would've liked (to make stickies, unusual lash fall out, use of bonder or primer, etc.) Keep these forms safe, and if a client ever calls or texts letting you know that their extensions are falling off quicker than usual, then refer back to your notes on these forms to see what could've been the issue.
TIP 2: MAKE SURE YOU'RE USING THE BEST GLUE FOR YOUR SKILL LEVEL
It is essential to use the correct glue speed, and it is the glue that holds everything together. If you use glue that is too slow, you'll end up with stickies, and if you use glue that is too quick, it might dry by the time it reaches the natural lash and will cause them to fall off quicker than usual. To know if this is the issue, we recommend brushing them rather vigorously a couple of times during the session. It is better that the extensions fall off during the session when you can control and change the glue or humidity, rather than when the session is done and the client is at home.
TIP 3: PROPER APPLICATION IS CRUCIAL
Make sure you are applying lashes correctly, that the base of the extension isn't sticking up, and that the majority of the lash extension is glued to the natural lash. Some people even find it better to glue a single extension to the bottom of the lash or to wrap the base around the natural lash, as it has more points of contact with the glue.
